Software as a Service (SaaS) Takes Root as Multi-Billion Dollar Industry
According to SaaS Mag, with increased adoption, especially of platforms like Salesforce Marketing Cloud Implementation, the Software as a Service industry is on the rise and was expected to surpass $130 billion by 2020. SaaS is a software distribution model in which a service provider hosts the application and makes it available for customers over the internet. There are three main categories of cloud computing:
- Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
- Platform as a Service (PaaS)
- Software as a Service (SaaS)
SaaS is similar to ASP (Application Service Provider) and on-demand computing software delivery models. In the SaaS model, where the provider hosts the client’s software and delivers it over the internet to an approved set of users, it closely resembles ASP. The on-demand software model of SaaS refers to when the provider gives clients network-based access to the software. The source code of the application remains the same and is specifically created for SaaS distribution. New functionalities are rolled out for all users simultaneously. Data storage depends on the provider-customer agreement—customers can opt for local storage, cloud storage, or a hybrid model. Organizations can also integrate other software, such as Salesforce Consulting Services or Salesforce Service Cloud Integration, with SaaS applications using APIs.
Advantages of SaaS Applications
Organizations prefer a pay-as-you-go model rather than purchasing software licenses and additional hardware to support it. Some key advantages of SaaS include:
- Cost-Effective Scaling – Businesses don’t need to invest in new servers or upgrade infrastructure to accommodate growth.
- Automatic Updates & Maintenance – SaaS providers, including Salesforce Implementation Companies, handle updates and maintenance, reducing reliance on in-house IT staff.
- Remote Accessibility – With data hosted in the cloud, users can access it from any internet-enabled device, a key factor in Salesforce App Development and remote work efficiency.
- Enhanced Security – Cloud security is generally safer than most on-premise software, benefiting businesses that lack dedicated IT support.
With over 80% of applications hosted in the cloud, organizations are confident that their operations no longer rely on legacy systems. Small and medium businesses, particularly in sectors like finance, benefit the most from SaaS adoption, leveraging solutions like Salesforce Financial Cloud and Salesforce Consulting Companies for tailored cloud strategies.
Disadvantages of SaaS Applications
There are few disadvantages to using SaaS, but organizations must strictly enforce their service level agreements (SLA) to mitigate risks related to disruptions and security breaches.
SaaS Architecture
Most SaaS solutions, including Salesforce Analytics Cloud and Salesforce Managed Services, use a multi-tenant architecture. A single version of the application, with a uniform configuration (OS, network, and hardware), serves multiple customers (tenants). Horizontal scaling, where applications run across multiple machines, ensures scalability. Some SaaS providers also offer a beta version of their software for select customers to test new features before full deployment.
Unlike traditional software models that require multiple versions, configurations, and custom installations across different customer sites, SaaS centralizes updates and maintenance under a single codebase.
Types of SaaS
SaaS applications can be categorized into two primary types:
- Vertical SaaS – Industry-specific applications, such as Salesforce for Financial Services in banking and insurance, or solutions tailored for healthcare, real estate, and agriculture.
- Horizontal SaaS – Industry-agnostic software designed for specific business functions, like Salesforce CRM Consulting for customer relationship management.
While horizontal SaaS was once considered more sustainable due to its broader reach, modern SaaS developers now focus on third-party integrations, allowing solutions like Salesforce Consulting Firms to serve niche industries effectively.
The Evolution of SaaS
According to Intuit Data, 85% of small business owners planned to increase investments in SaaS solutions, predicting that SaaS would become the most disruptive technology by 2020. Enterprises, on average, use between 25 to 100 SaaS applications across business functions.
With increasing competition in the SaaS domain, businesses must stay ahead by adapting to new trends. Key areas of evolution include:
- Artificial Intelligence Integration – AI and machine learning (ML) will reduce costs and enhance automation. Platforms like Salesforce Analytics Cloud already leverage AI for data insights.
- Blockchain in SaaS – While still emerging, blockchain is expected to disrupt SaaS solutions in industries like financial services, compliance, and government operations.
- Thought Leadership & Content Marketing – SaaS providers that focus on educational content rather than PR-driven messaging gain more organic traffic. However, only 20% of SaaS companies invest in educational blogs.
- Customer Success Focus – As competition increases, companies must prioritize customer success, retention, and engagement. Solutions like Salesforce Service Cloud Implementation emphasize account success, product adoption, onboarding, and upselling/cross-selling opportunities.
Nearly 73% of organizations expected all their applications to be SaaS-based by 2020, highlighting the growing dominance of cloud-based solutions. Companies that fail to adapt risk being left behind as the SaaS industry continues its exponential growth.
Pranshu Goyal, Director of Products at Mirekta, states: “We envision DSM to be used by every small to a medium-sized organization dealing with bad data and want to get rid of duplicates easily with no cost. We have faced issues dealing with duplicates in our organization. That inspired us to make a solution that is not only simple to use but can be used widely to make the organization’s data clean to make them more efficient and productive. We want DSM to be a solution for every organization looking for duplicate management capability better than the Salesforce out-of-the-box solution with no additional cost.”
