According to SaaS Mag, with increased adoption, especially of platforms like Salesforce Marketing Cloud Implementation, the Software as a Service industry is on the rise and was expected to surpass $130 billion by 2020. SaaS is a software distribution model in which a service provider hosts the application and makes it available for customers over the internet. There are three main categories of cloud computing: 

  • Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) 
  • Platform as a Service (PaaS) 
  • Software as a Service (SaaS)

     

SaaS is similar to ASP (Application Service Provider) and on-demand computing software delivery models. In the SaaS model, where the provider hosts the client’s software and delivers it over the internet to an approved set of users, it closely resembles ASP. The on-demand software model of SaaS refers to when the provider gives clients network-based access to the software. The source code of the application remains the same and is specifically created for SaaS distribution. New functionalities are rolled out for all users simultaneously. Data storage depends on the provider-customer agreement—customers can opt for local storage, cloud storage, or a hybrid model. Types of SaaS

SaaS applications can be categorized into two primary types: 

  • Vertical SaaS – Industry-specific applications, such as Salesforce for Financial Services in banking and insurance, or solutions tailored for healthcare, real estate, and agriculture. 
  • Horizontal SaaS – Industry-agnostic software designed for specific business functions, like Salesforce CRM Consulting for customer relationship management.
